The Right Tires for Minnesota Winters

Minnesota winters are hard on tires. Cold temperatures reduce tire pressure and stiffen rubber compounds, while ice and snow demand maximum grip. Many Elk River drivers choose to run a dedicated set of winter tires on separate wheels, swapping back to all-season or summer performance tires in the spring.

Winter tires are engineered with special rubber compounds that stay flexible in extreme cold, along with tread patterns designed to channel snow and bite into ice. If you’re driving through Elk River winters on all-season tires alone, a winter tire set is one of the best investments you can make in your safety — and your vehicle.

We can help you select the right winter tires, mount them on steel or alloy wheels, and store your off-season set so changeovers are quick and easy.

ALL TIRE - FAQ

How do I know when I need new tires?

The most reliable test is the penny test: insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head pointing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is below 2/32″ and it’s time for new tires. Other signs include visible cracking or bulging in the sidewall, frequent loss of air pressure, vibration while driving, or tires that are more than 6 years old regardless of tread depth.

Most tires last between 40,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on the tire type, driving habits, and how well they’re maintained. Regular rotation, proper inflation, and alignment checks all extend tire life. Even if tires look fine, manufacturers generally recommend replacing them after 6–10 years due to rubber degradation.

All-season tires are designed to handle a range of conditions — dry roads, light rain, and mild winter weather. They’re a good general-purpose choice but are not optimized for deep snow or icy conditions. Winter tires use a softer rubber compound that stays pliable in cold temperatures and tread patterns designed specifically for snow and ice traction. In Minnesota winters, dedicated winter tires offer a meaningful safety advantage.

Most manufacturers recommend rotating tires aproximately every 7,500 miles, or at every oil change. Regular rotation ensures even wear across all four tires, which extends their life and helps your vehicle handle predictably.

The correct tire pressure for your vehicle is listed on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb — not on the tire itself. The number on the tire sidewall is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure. During Minnesota winters, check your pressure regularly, as cold air causes tire pressure to drop (roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature).

It depends on the location and size of the puncture. A nail or screw in the center tread area can usually be repaired with a proper patch. Damage to the sidewall, large punctures, or tires with very low tread may not be safely repairable and may need to be replaced. We’ll inspect the tire and give you an honest answer.

Yes. Stop in anytime and we’ll check your tread depth, tire pressure, and overall condition at no charge. It only takes a few minutes and gives you peace of mind — especially before a long trip or heading into winter.
